Long Term Effects in Strength Load Combinations

Hello all,

AS1170.0 includes long term coefficient in one of strength load combinations as 1.2D+1.5*(FiLong)*Q.
What is the relations of long term effects with ultimate limit state? Should we use it for serviceability checks? But it is under the ultimate limit state section.

I presume it covers materials that have lower capacity under sustained loads, and situations like creep buckling of slender concrete columns.

The section defining that refers you to section 7.2.2 which talks about strength in terms of collapse, rupture or excessive deformation of a structure, so creep deflection under sustained loads as steveh49 suggested!
