In NX8 when I add an attribute "MATERIAL" and the value, it gets locked and I cannot change it or delete it if the value has to change.
Can I unlock it or what can I do?
Thanks

NO, the word Material is now a reserved attribute name and is under the control of the Material Library function. If you want to manually assign a Material attribute (which will have effect whatsoever on the material that the system will use when performing mass property calculations or CAE simulations) then just pick another name for your usage. However is you really LOVE the name 'MATERIAL', you can go to Customer Defaults and change the name that the system is using the Material Attribute and then you can use 'MATERIAL' as you did before.

This change was made because too many people were using the Material Library function to assign a material but then latter edited the Attribute thinking that this would also change the material assignment (it doesn't). So this addresses that issue.

How can I simple delete the "Material" attribute created?

You have to go to...

Customer Defaults -> Gateway -> Material/Mass -> Attributes

...and either disable the Material attribute or change the name to something besides 'Material', hit OK and restart NX.
