Does anyone know of a good way to locate conduits around a substation?

The instrument we have is one that ties to the neutral of the circuit you are tracing and sends out a radio signal. The problem with this method is that the neutral is tied to the ground grid at the substation and I wouldn't think your results,as such, would be all that accurate.

The only way I can figure to locate them accurately would be to disconnect the neutrals from the grid...this would be require a bit of work so hopefully there's an easier way.

Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks!

Dude,

Pick up your Transcat catalog, there are many useful pieces of equipment to help you with your current dilema, just be ready to spend some cash!!

Good luck, Tommy

Yeah, we started looking into equipment...it doesn't look like it will be cheap...I may just get out there with a shovel and start digging. Thanks for the forewarning and the reference though Tommy.

Actually, in michigan we call miss digg, maybe you have a utility crew in your area to scope it out for you!!

good luck...Tommy

we use an underground locator made by raycom. Has a radio unit and a remote unit. Works well for locating underground cables and such (can even triangulate depth). Not that expensive.

Do you have any spare wires or able to disconnect a single wire? You can tag on those and find the conduits.

The raycom will attach to the conduit itself and locate it.
