Dear All,

I would like to know how can I calculate the maximum allowable load on a roof nozzle in a API 650 tank.

I have seen Appendix P in API 650 for calculating loads on shell openings, but I have not found anything for roof nozzles.

We have a tank (already built) and we want to install steam traps on roof nozzles. We need to know the maximum allowable load, depending on nozzle size, roof type, reinforcement...

Best Regards,

Assuming you have the typical 3/16-inch thick roof and the nozzles do not have repads [not required per 650 & seldom used], these nozzles are not allowed to have any significant loading placed on them. Thus the lack of calc's for roof nozzles.

Shell calc's could used, if and only if your roof is built like a shell, with extra thickness and repads. Expensive. We just use pipe supports, and don't put pipe loads into roof nozz's.
