Hello,

I'm wondering about distributed live load in areas where cows can cogregate. Can anybody help me?

Thanx in advance

National Farm Building Code of Canada lists the minimum specified live load for Cattle between 3.5 kPa and 5.0 kPa. Loose housing for cattle is 5.0 kPa. The loading may vary depending on your location.

If tractors need to access the areas to clean stalls or bring hay, higher loads will be required.

5.0 kPa sounds about right, and should accommodate farm tractors as well as cattle.

From AS/NZS 1170.1 (Aust loading code):

dairy cattle, stall area 3.0 kPa
beef cattle 5.0 kPa
farm machinery, normal 7.0 kPa
heavy 10.0 kPa

And relating that to psf, the numbers are...?

Conversion 4.8 kPa = 100 psf

Also, for Farm Machinery Traffic = 7.0 kPa minimum (There are many combinations of equipment with 10.0 kPa minimum live load). Concentrated live load not less than 23 kN (5,170 lbs) over 750mmx750mm area.

There is also a clause indicating that tractor/equipment live loads shall be increased by 50% in processing and/or loading areas to account for impact or vibrations of the equipment.

I also found this:

Beef Cattle
Calves to 300 lb. 50psf
Feeders, breeders 100psf
Dairy Cattle
Calves to 300 lb. 50psf
Mature cows 100psf
Stall area 60psf
maternity or hospital pen 50psf
Swine
to 50 lb. 35psf
200 lb. 50psf
400 lb. 65psf
500 lb. 70psf
Sheep
Feeders 40psf
Ewes, rams 50psf
Horses 100psf
Turkeys 30psf
Chickens (floor houses) 20psf
Greenhouses 50psf

Thank you anyway for valuable posts

Mike-
Since you opened the gate, so-to-speak, I was going to ask if this was for the secretaries' area?

That was a low blow.

Wasn't there a famous horse named Secretariat?

Mike-
There was indeed a horse of that name, and there has been some secretaries who...[noevil]
