Links accross a network

Ok folks a few linking questions.

1. ive got an assembly that once the components are complete, the components, will be moved to a folder on the network. Is there any way i can easily update all the assembly links? (automatically) without going replace component?

2. Is insight any good? any links if it is? and how easy is it?

3. I want to work on models at home (floating licence) however as i said beore we will be putting the components on the network. I have a pocket drive so could sync the data and call it the network drive. do you think this would be sufficient to allow me to use the program at home and then sync back up? obviously i carnt just take the working folder home as it wont have all the network files and it falls down.

1. Search the help for link management (linkmgmt.txt I think). You can add search paths in this file so when you use Windows Explorer to move files, thus breaking links, SE will try to reconcile the link by searching for the files in the defined search paths.

The correct way to move the files is with Revision Manager (Insight Connect). Open up your top level assembly or drawing, highlight all the parts, click on rename, change the path (but don't actually rename the file), and perform actions. You may need to do a "where used" search in order to find the draft file of all the component parts.

2. Insight is fine for administering data in a small group or department. It is not meant for the entire enterprise and therefore lacks certain rights management, routing/approval cycles, and other tools necessary for an ISO certified release process. If you are really thinking you will need a PDM solution, I recommend you look into Team Center Express.

3. Can you VPN into your work network from home? This is the easiest as it also allows you to use the floating license off your work network. Otherwise just copy the files you need to work on at home, work on them, and then copy them back to the network over writing the existing files.

For working at home just copy the needed files to the same directory the assembly is in. Solid Edge will find those files, but the original links remain intact. So when returning home, you can just copy your revised files to the original location, overwriting old files, and everybody automatically uses your new parts.
