in the incoming of the substations there is a surge arrester which a CVT is usually TEE OFFED from the same wire that connects the surge arrester to the line.is there any possibility that because of a shorter path for the wave to the CVT ,the CVT would be the first to be destroyed ?

Dear 144X:

Since lightning and overvoltage waves are random phenomenon, everything is possible to happen. However, the effective protection of the surge arresters are base in the proximity to the equipment to be protected.
For effective surge protection, the arrester most be located as closes as practical to provide sufficient maintenance clearance, explosion and the space to safely vent gases generated during the surge arrester operation.
