Line pack calculation

I searched for this thread on discussion on this subject, but I could not find any.

Does anybody out there have experience in estimating line pack in gas line.

Line pack is the amount of gas that will be available in a pipeline at any given time.

I am specifically interested in the calculation method of carrying out the estimation of the amount of gas after shutdown and the time it will take to drain this gas downstream.

I've only got some experience in the sense I had some training on DREM which is a program for single phase gas or liquid transient behaviour. For liquids, it was used primarily for surge analyses. For gases, it was used for line pack calculations by utility companies. Essentially, they ran the program and could vary the draw rates or makeup at various locations/times/rates and watch to see how the pressure and inventory in the pipeline would change. It used to be put out by a company called Stoner Associates out of Houston, don't know if they are still using that name. I do know they are still in business though.

I would recommend using software that you dont develop yourself. This is a very complicated subject and the amounth of QA and testing required to accive a satifactory result is enormous.

I have come across the calculation procedure before in the past. It is just unfortunate that I cannot locate it any longer.

I still believe the procedure is out there.
