Hello all,

What difference between a Lightning mast and a Lighting pole?

Who has any information about Lightning mast manufacture in Canada and USA?

Thanks,

Jim

If your spelling is correct, one is part of a lightning protection system, and one is part of an outdoor lighting system.

Thanks EEJaime!

I am looking for a lightning mast for a 138kV substation now. I want to know if I can use a lighting pole or an antenna pole for a 138kV substation? Or A Lightning mast is different from them?

Well in that case I cannot be of any help, that's outside my field of experience. Some of the usual gents here will probably be of real assistance.

schneiderjim,

Contact TRYDOR INDUSTRIES of British Columbia for standard HSS lightning masts. They are available in 50 or 90 ft.

Normally the lightning mast consits of the pole and the spire at the top.

So if you are using a lighting pole as a lightning mast then you should install the spire of adequate height at the top of the pole.If the lighting pole is HSS steel then no need to ground the spire. But if the pole is wooden then you need to bond the spire to the grounding system using a down conductor.

I would consider the spire to be of dubious value. There will be no significant difference in the interception of lightning strokes with or without the spire.

A lighting pole of adequate height and strength will serve quite adequately as a lightning mast. Make sure that it has a grounding pad at the bottom.
