There is the choice of using either Basic Lights or Advanced Lights.
When doing shading in NX how does the system know the lighting that I want to use ?

The reason i am asking this is because I did a Photo-Realistic image and it appears
to be utilizing the Basic Lights.

The Basic Lights are a subset of the Advanced Lights.

You can see this yourself by going into Basic Lights, and toggle ON a couple of the lights, hit OK and then open the Advanced Lights dialog and you'll note that the same lights are listed in the ON section of the dialog.

The big difference between Basic and Advanced Lights is that in Basic Lights all you can do is toggle ON/OFF so-called 'scene' lights (which are fixed in position and direction) and control their intensity, while in Advanced Lights you'll still have ON/OFF/Intensity control over 'scene' lights as well as controlled their color. You also can add as many Point, Distant and Flood lights as you wish which you control not only their intensity/Color but also their location and direction as well as whether they cast shadows or not.
