Direct reading armored sight glass (both reflex and transparent) are made using tempered borosilicate glass in standard form. Shields are used to protect the glass for applications where the glass is not compatible with the vapor or liquid phase. For example a fired boiler drum at 500 PSI WSP would require a transparent sight glass with mica shields. Shields are flat, and only applicable on flat transparent glass. Reflex glass has prism shapes molded into the wetted side, therefore flat shields are not applicable because the shape and reflective design.
If your process fluid/operating conditions are compatible with tempered borosilicate, reflex is ok. If the sight glass is to be installed with a back light LED illuminator, a transparent must be used.
