Leg Reinforcing Pads

How can the leg reinforcing pads on a vertical tank, with leg eccentricity equal to zero, so the leg is welded to both straight side and bottom head, be extended so it continues below the straight side? When the height is increased the pad goes higher above the top of the leg, not down around the head.

COMPRESS uses the WRC-107 analysis to determine the stress in the shell due to the support legs. Further, the software does not allow legs to be attached to the bottom head in part because WRC-107 does not address rectangular attachments to dished heads (spherical shells) (a bigger reason this construction is not allowed in COMPRESS is that issues of buckling are not considered in the elementary analysis available in COMPRESS).

Consequently, the same restriction, for better or worse, is applied to the leg and reinforcing pad welding. Thus, what you are trying to accomplish (or model actual construction) can't be modeled in COMPRESS.

Most of the vessels we use are constructed this way. Some are round pipe legs, some are rectangular or I-beam, usually with eccentricity equal to zero. As long as I can attribute the leg error mesaages in Compress to this I can try to find another way to verify the benefit of the legs being attached to the head.
