Hi guys, I read in an Italian forum an worrying news. Many automotive companies (German) are leaving CATIA for Siemens NX.
This because the new Catia V6 is too revolutionary compared to V5. Also requires the use of a DS PLM and more companies have Siemens Teamcenter PLM.
What do you think? Is a leap into the unknown?

Dunno. I can think of one OEM that is going with CATIA. I don't really care much, the actual drawing side of the various CAD packages all seems much of a muchness, the CAD guys seem to spend more time on database issues and record management than drawing.

And you can use Teamcentre with CATIA, so that just seems more FUD. Sounds like someone with an axe to sell.

Most companies said the same thing about CATIA V5 when it was released, too.

There will always be chnage in the marketplace and functionality. Training is not an expense, but an investment in both your companies and your own future. The new releases may require some retraining of your exsisting skills.

Something is changing...
- DAYMLER - NX+TC
- GM after an intensive benchmark has preferred NX+TC to V6
- NISSAN - NX+TC
- FIAT - NX+TC
- FORD - TC
- OPEL & SAAB - NX
- ASTON MARTIN - NX

---------------------------------
VW/AUDI:
PDM: TC
CAD: Catia V5 - Pro/E (NX is being considered)
DMU: TC Visualization
DM: Tecnomatix

BMW:
PDM: TC + Custom application
CAD: Catia V5
DMU: TC Visualization
DM: Tecnomatix/Delmia

- RENAULT - Catia (TC for PDM)
- PEUGEOT - Catia/ProE
- BMW - Catia/ProE
- DCX - Catia
- LAND ROVER - Catia (maybe...NX :))
- FERRARI - Catia/ProE

Up to 10 years ago, the automotive market was Catia.
Now things are changing. And then DS should open the eyes!
Losing Daymler should be thinking...

10 years ago, the US automarket was:
GM, except Saturn: NX
Saturn & Chrysler: CATIA V4
Ford: PDGS & Ideas

Ideas has been absorbed by NX since then.

Most of the companies that you mention using Pro/E only use it in limited areas like powertrain compoments. Body work is done in their oter CAD package. Toyota uses Pro/E for powertrain, but their own system for body design.

Formula 1 race teams mostly use CATIA with a few using NX.
IndyCar teams use Pro/E, but they use it for suspension work, not aerodynamic design body work. Penske did use Pro/E when they built their own chassis.
Nascar teams use all of the major CAD systems, including Solidworks and Inventor.

The choice of software by a motorsports organization can be based on sponsorship.

At one point no one wanted to use UG because it was owned by GM.

GM owned EDS which owned UG and yes that was seen as GM owning UG, though from my UG contacts it was a very distant relationship between GM and UG. GM was and may still be the largest NX customer in terms of seats. GE would be second.

Sponsorship for the race teams does play into their CAD system choices. In most cases that I am aware of, the CAD system came first, then the sponsorship. Ususally it is free software, not money paid.

And as you would imagine, with Siemens AG moving up quickly...

To an Engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

And in 5 years it'll be completely different. At any instant in time one product will be in the sweet spot, 3 Moore's generations later, who knows? Good contract CAD guys are good on all the mainstream systems, they have to be.

Ben

I know of Lemans constructors that used the software that was given to them free instead of the one their engineers wanted. The teams that get featured in the ads for software are probably paid but the rest like you said just get it free (which is still worth lots of money).

Like any software choice there are many issues besides software the influence the decision. The conclusion for someone choosing a software package is that if a racecar team (or OEM) is using a piece of software that means it can do the job but it doesn't mean it is the best package out there.
