We are looking at options for tieing in a new (>40km)pipe section that will have been laid alongside the existing liquid line. Considering that we have to remove the fluid from the old pipe section as part of the operation are there any thoughts on how line plugging might be carried out for the tie-ins of the new section??

Its a 20" crude line. We know what equipment to use, we're trying to determine the best way to do it! i.e. how would you stage isolation of the old section and tie-in the new section along with removing the fluid from the old and filling the new! trying to do it with the minimum number of hot taps and plugs...

Really can't say without at least looking at a profile. What about what's in the new line now. Is there hydrotest water there or just air? There might be some possibility of draining into the new pipeline through a crossover at low points and filling some sections of the new line half-way up or so, then filling the new line from the pump station forcing hydrowater or air out to a vent at that same halfway-up point. Then close it and push the new line fill to the next half-way-up point, etc. Kind of a WAG without a profile to look at though. You'll still gonna probably need to do some pumping from the old line into the new one somewhere.
