Hi folks my name is Alex,
I'm looking for a common thread in models of laptop and their DC power connector sockets. Just the basic dimentions such as pin size, diameter of the hole and ratings. I'm not concerned about the angled or shielded variations. Most of the vendor sites show the center pin size of the socket and the laptop brand/model but not the hole diameters.
I was wondering if anyone could help me find this information.

Thank you,
Alex

There is no standard. I own four l@ptops and none of them have similar p0wer c0nnectors. Not even close. The big Dell I am writing this on has a very thin outer cylinder, (7.2mm dia), and a tiny pointed pin that projects about a third of the distance up from the bottom of the cylinder.

The only common thre@d is they are typically cylindrical c0nnectors.

Go buy a Targus or Kensington universal laptop charger. They retail for around $100 to $140, or a no-name for less. Each usually comes with an assortment of no less than 6 connectors that can also handle either polarity voltage.

Thank you for your responses and sharing your time & thoughts. I'm not looking to buy a power adaptor. From what I have seen so far there are about 6 different main types of laptop DC sockets with variations in the angle, mounting, and shielding. Some of the ones (jsbp4 and jsbp5) are industry standards. I'm not sure of the regular round ones with center pins 1.75mm, 2mm, 2.5mm. If anyone knows this please reply.

Thank you.

My point was that you can buy one and measure them

I got one of those Targus power supplies with all the connectors and it won't charge my company laptop a Dell 610. It will power it, but won't charge it.

Keith, you got one of those really BIG dell laptops? I have one with the large print setting and it is great!!!!!!

Yeah rmw! As much as I disliked Dell, this comp has be ~wonderful~. I use it constantly instead of my dual 21" monitor equipped mid-tower. I sit too much, and discovered that I could use the Dell on top of my TV furniture while standing. It also runs 3Hrs on a charge without cooking my lap. I take it down to the ocean and do CAD on it!! The big screen allows me to have two full windows open so I can CAD a schematic while looking at the pdf of an IC.

It sleeps the instant you close the screen then snaps back on the instant you open it. Really well done. But then you know this.[roll2]
