Laminar piston rings

I faced with an application, in which laminar piston rings are used on the piston. Normally, they are used in combustion engines. It's a normal hydraulic cylinder application, but extracts out relative faster around 15 m/s. Seals may heat very fast. Is it the reason why laminar ring is used, instead of normal NBR or FKM seals ?

Lower friction and higher velocity capabilities
 
Don't recall ever seeing spiral wound rings used on combustion engine pistons. Used on hydraulic pistons they would minimize leakage versus conventional piston rings, and if sized correctly 15 m/s would not seem to present a problem. Elastomer seals at that velocity and pressure would not work well.
