Hello
This is my first post.
I am from Argentina.
Surfing the web I have found this forum, good knowledge exchange.Gentle management.
I am searching in the Keyword area but not find answers for my problem

I am working in an overhaul of an engine 6-226 flathead from a Kaiser Willys Station Wagon of may father, when we sarted assembling valve springs, exhaust and intake valves.
The springs have an assimetric wound, with close wounding in one side.
I dont know what side is "down" when assembling the spring, close wound side or lose wound, with the engine in right position.
Many thanks for your time.

Jose,

The close wound section goes towards the valve head and the loosely wound end towards the tappet/cam.

Since you have a flathead, the heavy end is up towards the head and the loosely wound end goes down, to the spring retainer and valve keepers.

This is so the heavy part of the spring does not move as much. Less movement of the heavy end means less inertia force.

Good luck to you.

Hello

Many thanks EHudson.

Your answer is of big value.
My father is questioning me for this springs position and I have surfed the web and talking with mechanics in my town but no good reasons to mount on one side or other and I live in an semi isolated area and have no access to many mechanics.
We like to make a big overhaul in the old Kaiser Willys, front axle, gear box and engine.
We are in process of check the cilinders and piston.
Many thanks for your time and knowledge.
