Joint design question

We qualify our welders for weld repair of castings. Our usual process is to weld a single-vee groove, with a 70° included angle in the groove. I understand that joint design is a non-essential variable according to ASME. We normally put a 20mm deep groove in a 40mm thick plate.

People here have a memory that buried within ASME 9 somewhere is a picture of a groove showing 70° as the recommended joint angle. Can anybody confirm this? We would, for ease of machining the plate, prefer to have a 90° angle if possible.

I'm sorry I can't find any supporting documentation, but I have always seen 60° as the ASME standard for V-grooves, and 45° for a single bevel.

AWS D1.1 provides good guidelines for included angle tolerances, but as far as I know, there isn't any in ASME IX. So you can use whatever you want. 90° seems a bit excessive to me, I would keep it at 60° and increase the root opening if you need better access. But that's just me.

Correct, there is no such recommended groove angle in Section IX. This is considered a specific process detail.
