Jobs in Public Works? 1

Hi,

I am a freshman in college, majoring in electrical engineering. I found out that I am very good at math, physics, and problem solving.

Anyways, would I get a good job in the public sector/works with a master's degree in electrical engineering, and are these jobs found everywhere? I am a visual person, so I would also want something that involves design. Finally, job-search sites have far less listings than I expected.

Around here local utilities would be a good place to start. Our local hires students for interns and frequently post job openings. Also TVA would be a good place to look they have advertisements for interns or recent graduates as well.

Several cities own the loacl electric company, and that would be a good place to start.

Assuming you are a full time student, as a freshman internships will be hard to come by at this time. During your summer or other quarter off, you may be able to find employment in your area of interest. You may also wish to accept an internship in another science/engineering field should it materialize first.

Last summer, my nephew, a student at UC San Diego, found an internship with Stanford between his freshman and sophmore year. He liked the work he did in neurobiology so much that he changed majors from Engineering to Biochemistry and Biophysics.

Govt engineers don't usually do much designing any more, at least in places like the UK & USA as far as I can tell.

A good variety of work is typically available, to include design. If you like doing design work as opposed to management, grades generally top out at the GS 13. With an MSME you would probably start at either GS 12 or 13 level, meaning you've just about already hit the ceiling for pay.
