BP Managing Director Bob Dudley said, "The science of the plumes hanging in the water doesn't feel right. What happens is dispersant breaks the drops down into small drops and they move around and break down."

Researchers at the University of South Florida have completed laboratory tests confirming that the oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico has collected into more than one oil plume beneath the surface. The plumes are as wide as 6 miles, though their lengths are unclear, researchers said.

Last month, Dudley told NPR that the plumes likely would not remain. "Oil by nature, in its own specific gravity, isn't going to stay in a plume like that," he said. "It should rise to the surface, and then we'll be able to attack the spill in that way."

I think Dudley needs a review of Stokes laws as applied to settling and separation problems.

This isn't all that surprising, is it? Oil exploration has mostly been about roughnecks, rather than science types, over history, and would most companies promote a science-type into that position, or would it be a former roughneck?

There is at least some evidence that one forgets all principles of engineering when one starts writing things like MIM, Thunderbird, MBA, J.D. after one's name rather than P.E. This statement would seem to reinforce that evidence.

BigInch, I have found some of the most inept engineers have the PE behind their names. So letters behind a name seem to me to be ego strokes. So I have never used them and never will except where required by law.

OK - He was a chemical engineer, I'll give him some technical knowledge.

But he has been FINANCE and takeover and management and cost-cutting and what-is-the-price-of-the-stock-in-the-next-five-minutes type of positions ever since.

At least if a PE is inept he knows enough not to put his seal, or signature on things that can get himself into trouble. That is the idea, isn't it. Least that's my philosophy.
