For instance an Adobe Illustrator file doesnt work for me, maybe there is a way to insert that art on to the actual part or is there another file extension that works?

Illustrator works with 2006.

Otherwise, any sort of raster image file can be inserted into sketches.

With PhotoWorks, you can create decals and apply them to multiple surfaces, including the new label that will wrap around surfaces like a label (without distortion).

I use jpg files to trace over in solid models.

If you want a bitmap template, the png format is really good. Solidworks recognizes any transparency channels in the format and can automatically crop out the background(similar to transparent gifs)

Dwgs and dxfs work relatively well if you are intending to wrap logos etc: Like Theophilus said ai files should work in 2006.
