I can see the appeal of using ASME B18.24 as a tool for classifying fasteners, but have had great difficulty ordering parts according to the PIN number designations. For instance, the designations are often very specific in areas such as passivation treatments for stainless parts or in specific mixtures of various ASME/ASTM/SAE standards for the various properties of the fastener.

Many vendors struggle to accommodate these PIN classifications. I am curious what if this standard is working for others, or what system others are using for the ordering of fasteners for industrial use with material and specification traceability.

Thanks much,
Yook

The only users that that I have seen try to use this spec are certain U.S. government entities and they have had what appears to be limited success. My experience from the supply side is that there is not any acceptance of this as a numbering system to use for standard hardware by end users.
