GHi,

I did an infra red inspection on one 6,6 k V 3 cores XLPE Cable entering my 6,6 k V panel. There is nothing wrong on the terminal connections to the panel and nothing wrong either on the transformer terminals connection. The inspection is showing that part of the cable is heating as shown in the attached.
Grateful to have inputs from the forum.

It looks like you have a 3-phase conduit entering a panel from below. Within the panel, the three phase conductors split out of the conduit and connect to short angle busbars which connect to transformer bushings at top.

How did you conclude no problems at the connections near the top (cable to busbar and busbar to bushing)? Thermal survey with panel cover panel removed? If so, do you have that thermal image available ?

Dear all,

I did infra red inspection on the transformer bushings and nothing abnormal were found. The connections to the panel were checked physically and found tight. We could not do infra red inspection on the terminal connections as the inspection guy was scarced to do the test with the panel opened.The infra red could not be done as the panel connections are isolated through a perspex sheet.

Hi Venni,

I couldn't see your picture clearly. Anyway, have you checked the current (Ampere) of each phase ? If all the measurement shows almost equivalent results, then I believe that won't be any big issue.

However, it's very hard for you to determine the temperature differences at the bushing's surface, coz' it's made from porcelain. Furthermore, the temperature may be affected by other factors. The best, you may measure the temperature at the connection of bushing, if it is exposed and not blocked by any object, e.g perspex.

what was the "load" on the cable at the time you took the image?

Did you use a microhmeter across the connections? "Tight" just dosent cut it, you need to "ductor" it.
 
The pictures are poor but it sure looks to me like the heat is transferring down the wire from inside the panel, likely originating in a bad termination.
