Inverters for solely Syncing / Sourcing VARS

This may sound like a stupid question but could a large PV Inverter be used just to sync or source VARS? We have a project that has a major OH transmission line component and it's making it difficult to hit the required pf without jacking up the terminal voltages on the other PV inverters. The client is looking to avoid adding cap banks as well since they don't seem to play nice with inverters.
 
Yes, at least one brand is called a Static VAR compensator (STATCOM). S&C made the one my company has, but I don’t think they manufacturer them anymore.
