I'm trying to open inventor files with SW 2005 but solidworks says that there is no solid data in the file. I can open it using the inventor view but I can't get any dimensions from the part. Without re-exporting the file, does anyone know how to look at the inventor files.

Thanks
Charlie

There are several of problems here.
First of all you stated that the problem was opening in SWX therefore I expected an ACIS (*.sat). STEP (*.stp) or IGES (*.igs) exported from Inventor as well as the ipt file. SWX will only open old Inventor files. You need to Save As a neutral file format.

Second it is common practice to roll up the End of Part marker and zip the file to reduce file size.

Third, the Inventor sketches were not fully constrained indicating a lack of professional training. You might want to read this document

charland ... I don't know what version of Inventor the files were created in, but they opened up fine for me using SW07-SP3. According to the Help files, SW will import native Inventor V10 files.

matherjd ... The largest file size was only 186KB. Not worth the effort to zip.

iProperties indicated the files were Inventor r9.

I'm running SW 2005 SP2 (our best customer refuses to pay more solidworks fees so we've decided to hold off any upgrades to the newer versions as well). Now that I look in the help files, it indicates that this version of SW only opens up to Inventor 7.

Perhaps I will install a newer version of SW on my machine and work from there.

Thanks

Sometimes the tail has to wag the dog!

If you upgrade your SW you may be able to show your customer the benefits ... like opening Inventor files. [smile]

I didn't want to comment becasue I don't use Inventor, yet. But I gave CBL and handleman stars for your comments.
