ACI 530, paragraph 1.13.3.2:
Does this refer to anchorage only to roofs and elevated floors?, or does it also apply to the floor that the wall is sitting on? If so, what does "direct connection" mean? Is the friction between mortar and floor slab a direct connection? Or are a keyway or dowels required?

How about citing the specific provision for those of us who are reading this from home and don't have ACI 530 available?

Generally, friction does not qualify as a direct connection. There must be some sort of mechanical interlock.

ACI 530, 1.13.3.2 says "Masonry walls shall be anchored to the roof and all floors that provide lateral support for the wall. The anchorage shall provide a direct connection between the walls and the floor or roof construction. The conn. shall be capable of resisting....1000 x Av lbs. per lin. ft."

Friction is not a direct connection!

The connection applies top and bottom of wall. Agree with Qshake - no friction allowed.
