Is there a way to place an internal head anywhere other than at the end of a shell section? I need to place an internal head about halfway in the shell course but cannot find anywhere to specify a distance from datum. Is it possible at all?

Make two (2) shell sections

one for the top
the internal head
one for the bottom

I would have answered sooner as vesselfab above but I thought it was a trick question. ;)

No trick question. I guess I'm not getting it. I want to know if there is a way to insert an intermediate head per UW-13.1(e) without getting lots of deficiencies. that may not be what sixeightnick is asking.

OK LET'S TALK

compress sees a long shell section as one design element.

an internal head is normally...for compress to care about it...is a pressure component that separates two pressure chambers.

the top shell...above the head is one shell section for one pressure chamber.

the lower shell....below the head is another pressure chamber.

each pressure chamber should have it's own shell so you can assign different pressure/temperature requirements to either or both of them.

this way the program can assign internal pressure and external pressure, two corrosion allowances etc.

is that any better

vesselfab, Thank you for the perfect explanation. I have been out of the loop for a couple weeks and haven't been following this forum.

You point out the obvious fact (that I had never thought about before) that because the pressure and temperature conditions in the two chambers may be different, it is then necessary to model two separate cylindrical shell courses to represent the two different chambers.
