Instruments need to measure gearbox vibration and noise

Dear all,
I have a industrial gearbox with single stage reduction. It has i/p from 5HP Diesel engine and o/p to sugarcane crusher. If one wants to measure the gearbox vibration, what instruments are needed and what important gear parameters to consider for measuring the vibration and noise.

Sounds like a very tough application. It's good that you are looking into these issues.

Provided the gearbox is still in reasonably good condition, the most telling data would be torque at the gearbox output shaft. The best way to read this is to put a torque transducer between the gearbox output shaft and the crusher input shaft. It's very important that the torsional rigidity of the system under test is as close as possible to the torsional rigidity of the system in production.

Another possibility is to put strain gages on, preferably, the gearbox output shaft (or possibly the crusher input shaft). This is a costly proposition, but may have the advantage of best possible reproduction of production conditions.

You could avoid the expense of telemetry, etc. by measuring the reaction forces at the gearbox anchor points (with transducers), but this would probably damp out peaks and other important data.
 
If you're interested in just the vibration of the gearbox then mount an accelerometer on it. You can look at the output on a scope or spectrum analyzer.
