Inspecvtion Opening Does Not Meet Code

Hello,

Is there any way to justify to the customer the use of a 2" long weld neck as an inspection opening on a 24" OD vessel? This design slipped through the cracks. It is built & installed on the skid. It would be very costly at this point to repair. The local jurisdiction & the AI will accept this vessel as a one time build. However, the customer wants some clarification. I would appreciate any comments.

No it does not meet code. It is not part of any customer spec. I am responsible for vessel design & checking.

I would refer it to the user, actually. If they view that fitting as a formality required by code that they don't really care about, they should be able to say that's okay. If they actually do inspection through the fittings, check with the inspectors and see what they need and whether that would be a problem.

Where in relation to the 24" vessel is the 2" long weld neck because if it is at the end of the vessel whereby you can see the entire inside longitudinal length, it could be acceptable, eventho., it is by right not an inspection opening. Why not cut out a hole and reinforce the new hole with a welded ring for an inspection opening.
