Inner diameter sensors

Hi guys,

I am a mechanical engineer currently working at Playmobil. Polymobil is currently considering changing the way the wig/cap/hat inner diameter tolerance checks are done. These tolerance checks are current done by the operator using a gauge which has two sides have different diameters. The operator inserts the gauge inside the part and checks whether it is within tolerance or not. Playmobil requires a system which should be faster than the current one and also as much cost effective as possible. What I was thinking is using a measuring head or probe like the ones on this site
Playmobil has not specified whether the operator still has to keep hold of the part with his hands while doing these tolerance checks. What I was thinking is whether there is another way of going about the fact that a different jig has to be made for each cap/wig/hat since they obviously have different shapes. Any other suggestions for both the sensors and the jigs are truly appreciated.

PS. The tolerances range is between 15.05mm and 15.15mm.

An operator can't possibly hold a part steady enough to get a stable reading from a two-point diameter gage as you have referenced. You need some kind of fixture to hold each part.

It's silly and slow to use that sort of gaging vs. go/nogo plug gages, unless you're implementing some sort of SPC system, where you have to gather, record, and archive actual measurements.

To speed up the current operation, replace the double ended plug gage with a stepped plug gage, where the go and notgo plugs are on the same stem on the same end of the handle, so the operator doesn't have to turn the gage around to do both checks.

Yes an SPC system is required for this application which is why I chose that two-point gauge. Thanks Mike
 
An electronic plug gage would be what I would recommend. There are numerous manufacturers.
