I have this problem in an indentation simulation. The top layer of elements (sample being indented) which are in contact with the indenter got squeezed to be very thin. Then at some level the top edge of the element will go even lower than the bottom edge. The indenter is still in contact with the top edge of the the element so now the indenter is inside the material, which becomes a problem.

I am not sure whether I explained it clearly or not. Anyone can help here? I am really appreciated.

Hi,

Due to the extreme distortion of the elements under the indenter, you have to use a highly refined mesh in this area. Also in Abaqus/Standard, the more refined mesh should be used as the slave surface. Another option is to consider the use of remeshing.

I actually tried to use refined mesh. Since it is a 3D model and needs quite a lot of memory. It says: can't allocate enough memory. I set the pre-memory and standard memory to be around 2Gb. The PC has 3Gb in total. Do you have any suggestion on that? Thank you.

The other option I can recommend is remeshing.

Can you use symmetry or axisymmetric to reduce the problem size? I hope this helps.
