Is it necessary to use UL listed wiring when installing low voltage wiring (CAT5, Coax, speaker, etc.) in the walls of a home under construction? Can I just use the less expensive variety that is not UL listed?
All Electrical equipment must be approved for the purpose.
See Article 100, 110, 110-3b. Approved for the purpose means acceptable to The Authority Having Jurisdiction.
Its your license!
i was just called on this one by an overly nitpicky inspector. he cited nec110-3b disallowing my removing of the sheathing of alarm wire too far away from the window. not sure if he's right on this or not but he sure is a pain to work with.
I would consider if there was a fire and you didn't have an approved wire, could the insurance company deny you a new home. I've heard it happen before from an inspector. Christopher Caserta
