My psychiatrist told me I talk to myself too much.

if it's any consolation, tell your shrink it's called thinking out loud[ponder]
 
I try to keep an open mind, but not so open that my brain falls out of my head.
 
When improving yourself, you probably feel like you are running out of time, so this could be a pointer to the underlying problem : limited time.
And I think your question is very central which I did not know how to tackle myself. Until I could think about this as the antidote: "improving life of others"?
