Hello to All,
The below query in reference to impact test specimen sizes as per ASME Section VIII Div. 1 (Clause UG-84(c)(2)(a)) & ASME Section VIII Div. 2 (Clause 3.11.7.2 (b)).
As per the above-mentioned clauses, is it mandatory to use impact test specimens of 10 mm x 6.7 mm if the absorbed energy is in excess of 240J (244J for Div. 2) for standard 10 mm x 10 mm size specimens?
Background
During impact testing of a welding procedure using SA 516 Gr. 70 base material, the impact test in HAZ was reported as 278J, 246J & 263J. The absorbed energy reported in the base material test certificates is in excess of 300J. Now the authorized inspector is insisting that it is mandatory to carry out retest using 10 mm x 6.7 mm specimens for both welding procedure and base material.
