Impact machine foundation 1

Hi,

Anyone has a guideline or design example for a foundation for impact machine ? I have a die cast machine, the manufacturer is giving : Machine weight 155000 lb, the horizontal shake force at 140 RPM is 31500 lb and vertical shaking force is 15000 lb.

ACI 351.3 R-04 treats the subject. The bible of this kind of design is Design of Structures and Foundations for Vibrating Machines by Arya, et al.

By the way, (in case you haven't done this type of design before)......one tricky deal with it is it's effect on adjacent structures. This isn't your normal pump foundation or light compressor......this is almost like day to day pile vibrations. So keep this in mind.

I dug in some more tonight into a older reference: 'Dynamics of Bases and Foundations', by: Barkan (1962). Pretty much considered a classic in this line of work, it goes into the design of a impact base. (makes points you just don't see anymore.)

One drawback to it though: he is tying down the base to wood and so forth. (That was actually pretty common way back when.) Today the standard is more towards preloaded bolts [down to] a mat with a epoxy grout on the surface. Master builders/BASF has some of those types of details on their site. I think 5 Star does too.
