We are looking to use an impact echo method to check an existing slab for thickness, as well as cracks and voids. The idea was to set up a grid, an analyze each grid center. Is there anywhere that states what size grid is recommended for this type of application? I was thinking 1ft x 1ft grids for a 160 sq ft area.

Looking for voids I usually move along a line in rows of 4 to 6 feet apart and use a hammer bouncing along in large arcs swung back and forth as I move along the line.

For an approx 13'x13' area I think that a 1' grid is appropriate for IE.

Not sure if there is a stated recommended grid spacing. Maybe check ASTM or ACI, they may have some guidance.

Thank you for your responses. Manufacturer of impact echo also agreed with the 1 ft grid.
