I am trying to reverse engineer a retaining ring for a piston. The retaining ring was under hardened. The piston has a flange that strikes the retaining ring. Both the flange and the retaining ring are relatively short and thick, so plate analysis for absorbed energy is not a feasible analysis to do. I am looking for input on analysis methods to do to see if the underhardened ring will be sufficient to retain the piston without breaking/chipping.
