Up here in new england, a lot of the old potatoe barns have tapered concrete celler walls. The reasoning for this, I have been told, is so that the frost cannot get up under the wall, it mearly slides up on it,
Though setting up forms for this looks like a difficult task, I am considering tapering the celler walls of my home for this purpose, Have any of you any experiance in this type of construction?
Also, I am thinking of putting a 6' access door to the celler below ground in the center of a 42'x8' wall. and am worried about maintaining structual integrity, my first thought was to sink a steel I beam above the doorway to keep it from cracking, but I'm wondering if an I beam sunk in concrete will cause problems in the future, due to rust or other problems.
