IC for a reversing type motor 1

Hi,

I need to operate a 12VDC 2-wire PM motor in both directions. I will be interfacing it through a microcontroller. What i am asking is if there is an IC that operates on 5V and can control the 12V (and polarity) that will control the motor. Or is there a method anyone can suggest with maybe using a solid state relay IC and another IC. I just need to be able to operate a motor in forward and reverse through programming and not by physically switching the polarity on the motor terminals.

The motors will be drawing approximately 4amps

Try a DPDT relay. It can easily be operated by 5V electronics, and has a higher current carry capacity than most simple IC solutions. Otherwise, you may need to build your own H-bridge out of several discrete components... but if you need to go that route, you can check out International Rectifier (

to look at the drivers and transistors needed. I think the relay is easier to understand, and quicker to develop, and might be cheaper too.
