I need to temporarily support bridge beams at abutment. Length from footing varies from 3'+- to 8'+-, want to use segmental HS12x12x3/8 with a single 1x18x18 plate between segments. No more than 4 segments per column. Neoprene will be used top and bottom for rotation at longer columns and shear at shorter columns. The thermal movement is .43" the load is 150k+-. I'm thinking friction coef. of 0.4 Is there any reason to weld the segments?

A picture of what you are proposing would help. Better yet, get a structural engineer to design it.

Thanks hokie66 for reply. It is designed, we can find no forces to weld for. The support is for 3 to 4 weeks. Looking for any input (reason to weld)

Will the bridge remain in operation?? If so, I might weld it just so I could sleep at night. What about seismic??
