NFPA (in various standards) makes the following (or similar) statement in the Scope section: "The values presented for measurements in the Code are expressed with a degree of precision appropriate for practical application and enforcement. It is not intended that the application or enforcement of these values be more precise than the precision expressed."

So, my question is, does the I-Codes have similar language or expectation?

Where it becomes important at the moment is for area and height calculations. The mixed-separated occupancy building ratio currently works out to be 1.04 when I'm limited to <= 1 and I'd really like to make this work vs. asking the Architect to slice out some building area or add some more fire barriers.

Thoughts?

I always giggle when I read that clause in certain NFPA standards because it's an accurate statement but it can be very easily abused. Most design professionals are code officials are honest and technically competent and are doing what's best for their clients. However, I believe we all have run into so pretty sleazy or incompetent folks in our respective careers. It's rare but it happens.

In your case, you have a condition that falls into this category. However, I don't have enough information to answer the question. Is the mixed use involving a Group H (hazardous) or Group I (Institutional)? Can you employ a fire wall so as to eliminate all of the fire barriers? Can the IEBC employed if it's an existing building?

Internet forums are great for a lot of things. In your case, I suggest talking to the jurisdiction's Building Official as this individual will weigh all the factors and may offer other suggestions.

Am I reading your response correct Mr Stookey...my question (or approach) is sleazy and/or incompetent? Or are you meaning something else. Also, this has nothing to do with H or I or any other occupancy group...simply the intent/expectation of the ICC.
