We have 5 employees in our growing structural firm. We are looking for a financial software that we can:
1) Input excel timesheets into and it will tell us how much we need to bill based on individual rates.
2) Do payroll
3) Organize by project number
4) How much the quote for the job is
5) How much has been paid to date
6) Clients are sycronized with MS Outlook
7) Project numbers and descriptions are sycronized with our job list (MS Excel)

There are more than these, of course.
I figured there was something better than peachtree or quickbooks that was made especially for engineers.

FrancisL,

You may have a point. Quickbooks may do it all, but I only explored the trial version just a few hours. It's been a while, but I seem to recall it wouldn't do every thing we wanted...something about invoices could not be associated with a project number and maybe a few other things too.

I just guessed that someone had developed a software specifically for engineering offices. If quickbooks is best, I'll use it.

YOuc an try Billquick-not sure it does all of teh above. QB allows invoices to have project numbers-we do it all the time in my office.

Good tip greenone!

Billquick looks nice. I read up on it at
It integrates with Quickbooks (expecially) , Peachtree, or MS Small Business Accounting. Looks like it is made for architects and engineers. And the lite version appears to be free!? However the full version is 400 bucks.

Yes, lite is free, but it really only works for a sole proprietor type of business.
BQ is pretty good, but they do try to get you to upgrade all the time. One thing we like, is they have modules you can buy so you can log your time on your Palm, and then upload when you get bck to your desktop. Useful for those of us in the field a lot.
