I'm relatively new to HYSYS dynamics, and am having to brush up a great deal on process control in general. My component mole fractions are 0.02 C1, 0.43 C2, 0.3 C3, 0.125 iC4, 0.125 nC4. The feed enters a fractionation column where C2 is the LK. I am using a feed valve and PI flow controller to control the feed rate into the column. Once I stabilize the flow rate, I can tune the other controllers in the column. I am having considerable difficulty finding Kc and ti values to stabilize the flow rate, which ranges from 3000 lbmol to 6000 lbmol. The controller is set to reverse acting, PV is set at tower feed flow rate, OP is the valve position, and the SP is 4000 lbmol. The feed temp is 100F and pressure at 460psia.

Everyone I have talked to has said all i can do is trial and error. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to tune PID controllers in HYSYS other than trial and error?

Well, You can try banging your head against the wall, but you just end up with lost-time injuries and damaged equipment. [M. Passman]
