Hi,

I'm HVAC engineer in France, and I'm working about an unsual subject, the petroleum counting system design. I would like to determine the inside diameter of pipes. It seems that it would suffice to fix the diameter in order that the maximal flow could circualte at maximal velocities.
Does Someone know the maximal acceptable velocities in pipelines for gas and liquid hydrocarbon?
Maybe values exist in standard conditions of pressure and temperarture (15°C, 1013mbars) and we must carry out the design for these standard conditions.

Thank you to help me on this subject.

Velocity limitations for piping design are quite subjective and highly dependent on the specific characteristics of the service fluid. There are a number of different places you might find criteria for this but I often use the criteria published by NORSOK so I'll point you in that direction as these are available online ....

Thank you,

I effectively readed that the max velocities are equal to erosional velocity. Generally,
the gas velocity is limited 40% to 50% of erosional velocity. and correct velocities are 10-13m/s.
In connection with the formula which you are give, is it adapted to liquid hydrocarbon?
For gas hydrocarbon Norsok speaks about maximal velocities to prevent noise.
Norsok P-001 speaks about 6m/s for liquid velocities in Carbon steel pipelines.

In my case, the oil is under pressure of 60 bars.

Can pressure change density and velocity of liquid ?
