Can anyone give me some information on the quasi-static loads on rail cars due to humping shocks. I have dynamic values, but lack anyu information such as damping coeffs and impact durations, strokes, etc.

My goal here is to calculate the g force applied to cargo.

Thanks,

I don't have any data, sorry. But it would seem easy enough to actually measure. You could put a recording acceleration monitor on a car to be humped. Find the average Gs attributed to humping then double or triple the value.

Or you could get those G-stickers and put several different ones on a bunch of cars.

Part of the problem is that humping isn't necessarily the biggest shock.

The big shocks come from a long train trying to pick up a lone car out on some siding with a lousy crew.

Or a train running over a hill and having all the slack arrive at the last car.
