HSS under baseplate to transfer shear 3

I am working on baseplate with very large moments and shear forces. The columns are W14s. I intend to use a heavier (wider) W14 as a baseplate to convert the moment to up/down force at each end of the baseplate. I think I can I resolve the moment this way but to transfer the shear I was planning on using a HSS welded to the baseplate.

Has anyone used a WF base plate with a welded HSS?

I have used a pipe shear lug in the past and ran into the following problem.....the stress profile on the conc is not constant accross the dia of the pipe and can have a high peak stress @ the centerline of the pipe and if you are designing everything to a "knat's eyebrow", one can overstress the conc.....if I remember correctly, I decided that since that area of the conc is confined that ending up with rubble in that area would not compromise the design....however, in reversal of shear loading, I could see the pipe shear lug "walking" thru this rubble...it may be overkill on my part but since then I have not used pipe for shear lugs...
 
My question to those who have used pipe or tube shear keys that "work great" is, did you break one out and examine it or are you simply saying it didn't fail under load?

Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a rain dance.
 
"work great" = Easy to install & doesn't get in the way of your pedestal shear ties like a traditional shear key does.

I can't say I've ever tested one to failure though.
