I'm looking for the minimum thickness of HSS wall B based on PJP prequalified single bevel groove weld BTC-P4 shown in aisc 360-10 p8-56.

The minimum dimension "X" is not shown in the diagram, but i suspect it's 1/8" based on note k, although it's a little vague.

With a minimum dimension of 1/8", that means the HSS wall has to be 3/8" or thicker to use this cap plate weld, structurally. We would like to use it with 1/4" thicknesses.

Normally, that wouldn't matter but we're trying to work out a typical detail for a concealed HSS header connection that would utilize the cap plate. The weld wouldn't need to take much force, though.

Anyone have a workaround or insight? Im thinking I might need to use a single V groove weld BC-P2 shown on p8-54 but that sounds like a pain to fabricate over and over.

Side notes:

[li]Yes, i understand that this weld is normally a nonstructural square weld[/li]
[li]A fillet weld is not an option for this condition since it will protrude from the wall cavity.[/li]

Yes, the minimum dimension for "X" (the root face) is 1/8", which is noted as "f" in the diagram and table in the steel manual.

Rather than have the cap plate go over the end of the HSS, you could put it inside the HSS. This would allow you to weld it with a fillet, or if you want it to stay flush, stick with a PJP.

Why would you need this type of weld? Cap plate slightly smaller than HSS and just a fillet?

whelp, this is a pretty simple solution that i cant believe i didnt think of.

dik's solution is what I've always seen from fabricators for any cap plate and seal weld callout for HSS

after you've done a few thousand of these things... it's sort of 'muscle memory'
