HSS bolted connections 1

Hello everybody,

How do you guys usually connect HSS (square) to other structural members and why?

-Welded in shop and send as one piece?
-Welded tabs/angle and then bolted on site?
-Drill holes and then through bolts on site (have to be careful with preload)?
-Tapped holes(bolt goes through only one side)?
-any other idea

Most of what I do utilizes plates shop welded to the ends and/or sides of HSS to be field bolted together.

Depends on the connection and what I want it to do. Standard shear connections are just that - usually a single plate and bolt the beam on at the site.

A moment connection - the two most cost effective solutions are probably a continuous beam over the column (not the stiffest option) or shop welded beam stubs with an end plate that you can bolt up in the field. Field welding a direct beam to column moment connection is an expensive proposition.

Careful with your bolt through the HSS stuff. Those aren't really "bolted" connections. They're actually pin connections. The AISC bolt equations assume a certain amount of confinement of the base material (in this case, the HSS wall) that isn't possible without crushing the HSS.

I'm always concerned about the effects of the 'knife edge' load on the face of the HSS tube.

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Feel any better?

You still need access both sides for TC bolts - just one side you only need to get a hand on the bolt. Would be fairly hard to install in HSS unless large and the connection is at the top (or if you cut in windows)
