HSS beam to WF column connection

I have a HSS beam (HSS 16x12) with Torsional loading due to facade attachment and this beam frames into web of WF column (W10). As it has to tranfer torsion inaddition to shear, typical shear tab connection does not work. And as column is narrow,--any suggestion on connection type and geometry?

While others may have better ideas, the first thing that comes to mind for me are end plates. I'd consider an oversized plate from flange to flange on the column. You could use 2 to 4 clip angles attached to the HSS to bolt to the plate. Or you could put an end plate on the HSS and bolt to the column plate.

if the columns is so narrow that an endplate will not fit in the web space, you can add a plate across the web as has been stated and also added stiffeners on top

I've provided top and bottom clip angles with slotted holes in the leg attached to the HSS. This allows for simple beam rotation, but still takes out the torsion.

I like the clip angles options as mentioned by StructuralEIT. I believe it is much easier from a constructibility standpoint.

Just to clarify my preference, it is the second of weab's suggested details. Don't connect to web, just plate across the flanges, then bolt end plate of HSS to that plate. What could be simpler?

By the way...why do we call them end plates? The beam has to begin somewhere!

On a column, they are called base plate and cap plate. Why not bottom and top plate? A curious language we use, but I like it.

Careful gentlemen or we'll be demanding that we refer to left end or right end, end plate. Of course, then we'll be second guessing the Detailer as to which will be his "left end"

All agreed with End plate connection. And clip angles top and bottom sounds good- similar to seated connection. I would prefer welding clip angle to HSS rather than bolting assuming bolting is little tricy on HSS.It may requires either access holes or need to use blind bolts.
Are most of you agree on welding over bolting on HSS memebers?

I've never seen anyone try to bolt to an HSS, except for a single erection bolt in a gusset plate wind brace connection that is ultimately welded.
