Does anyone know of a reference for designing a moment connection of two HSS beams using end plates?
Basically a flange connection as you'd see in pipe spools but using square HSS.

Are these end plates then mated together and bolted?

Jike-

Yes, this is indeed my intent.

I would use something similar to LRFD Vol.II p.10-21 Extended End-Plate Connections.

Is that a splice? Beam to girder? Beam to column?

essentially a splice

Same answer as this thread from a couple of days ago:
The black AISC HSS Connections Manual has this connection, for both rectangular and round tubes. The examples are for axial load, but a small transformation will convert your moment into an equivalent axial.

well. I can't think of any other literature with an end plate that would be similar to what I mentioned above and AISC 13th ed. p.12-8

maybe without an end plate would work as well - similar to AISC 13th ed. Fig. 12-7 p.12-11
